State Health Insurance Assistance Program
APPRISE is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) for Pennsylvania’s Medicare beneficiaries. The Pennsylvania Department of Aging created APPRISE to help citizens with Medicare understand their health insurance options so they can make informed decisions about which plan is best for them. The Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging funds our local APPRISE program.
Allegheny County APPRISE is operated by Family Services of Western PA, in partnership with the Area Agency on Aging. Please call us at 412-661-1438 to speak confidentially with a trained counselor. We are able to help many people over the phone; in-person counseling is also available at our office, one of our convenient satellite locations, or in a homebound client’s residence.
Our counselors are trained to answer your questions and provide you with easy-to-understand information about Medicare, supplemental insurance, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicaid, long-term care insurance and the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit.
In addition to one-on-one counseling, APPRISE counselors are available to speak to fellowship groups, retirees, caregivers, social services professionals, and others interested in learning about Medicare.
